THE STUDY OF EATING: MIND AND BODY
Michael R. Lowe, Ph.D., is a professor of psychology in the Ph.D. training program in clinical psychology at Drexel University in Philadelphia. The Program in Eating Disorders and Obesity Research was developed by Dr. Lowe in 1989. The domains of research reflected in this program include restrained eating and dieting, nutritionally-focused interventions for obesity, the role of weight suppression and current dieting in eating disorders, the investigation of “hedonic hunger” and a new tool (the Power of Food Scale) to measure it, and the use of various neuroimaging methods to better understand normal and disordered eating. Dr. Lowe’s research lab consists of post-doctoral fellows, several doctoral and masters students, research coordinators and undergraduate co-op students and volunteers. He also collaborates with Drs. Meghan Butryn and Evan Forman, Drexel psychology faculty, on studies of obesity and eating disorders.
Dr. Lowe’s research on eating disorders and obesity has been continuously funded by NIH since 1999. He was an associate editor for Journal of Abnormal Psychology and is currently an Executive Editor for Appetite. He has been a consultant to Weight Watchers since 1991 and a member of their Scientific Advisory Board since 1997. He has been a research consultant to the Renfrew Center for eating disorders since 2005.
